What is Antwerp’s Most Brilliant?

Antwerp’s Most Brilliant is a quality label created to help consumers identify Antwerp jewellers whose business operations have been independently evaluated. A jeweller does not receive the label solely because of its collections, designs or reputation. The certification process examines how the business operates, informs customers, documents its products, complies with applicable legislation and provides service before and after a purchase.

The City of Antwerp describes the label as an assurance that participating jewellers comply with strict standards relating to sustainability, safety, reliability, transparency and service. The certification is valid for two years.

Who awards and audits the label?

The Antwerp’s Most Brilliant label is awarded by the City of Antwerp and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, commonly known as AWDC. The audit is performed by Kiwa Belgium, an independent inspection and certification organisation. Kiwa examines the jeweller’s compliance with the published selection criteria and produces an audit report.

A jeweller may use the Antwerp’s Most Brilliant label only after successfully completing the evaluation process. A new audit is required when the two-year certification period ends.

The nine Antwerp’s Most Brilliant selection criteria

The current City of Antwerp and AWDC communications refer to nine selection criteria, covering the following areas:

1. An established physical retail business in Antwerp. The jeweller must operate a physical retail location within the City of Antwerp, and customers must have access to jewellery setting, alteration or transformation services.
2. Integrity and complaint handling. The business and its directors are subject to an integrity assessment, and the jeweller must have procedures for handling customer complaints.
3. Compliance with tax and social legislation. The jeweller must demonstrate compliance with Belgian tax and social legislation, including written information about VAT-refund procedures for eligible customers.
4. Compliance with economic and consumer law. The audit examines business registration, precious-metal markings, consumer information, pricing, e-commerce and payment practices.
5. Service and transparency. Customers must be given understandable information about diamonds, including the 4Cs and relevant treatments, with service in Dutch, French and English and after-sales assistance.
6. Certificates and product descriptions. Documentation must clearly distinguish between diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds and treated diamonds, with independent gemmological reports for certain diamonds.
7. Business stability and professional experience. The jeweller must demonstrate business continuity, financial and administrative stability, and relevant professional experience.
8. Communication and representation of Antwerp. Legally required company information must be provided, and the certification must be displayed visibly.
9. Safety and security. The jeweller must maintain appropriate physical, organisational and insurance-related security measures.

What does the label mean for an Orogem customer?

Orogem’s certification means that our business has been assessed against the Antwerp’s Most Brilliant requirements. For customers, this includes commitments concerning clear information about jewellery, precious metals and gemstones; transparent distinction between diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds and treated diamonds; appropriate product and gemmological documentation; compliance with Belgian consumer and economic legislation; multilingual customer assistance; after-sales service and complaint handling; secure business operations; and continued re-evaluation.

What the label does not mean

Antwerp’s Most Brilliant should not be confused with a laboratory grading report. A grading report issued by an institute such as GIA, HRD Antwerp or IGI describes an individual diamond or gemstone. Antwerp’s Most Brilliant assesses the retailer, its procedures and its compliance with the certification criteria.

The label therefore does not determine the precise grade of an individual diamond, the market value of a particular jewel, whether a specific jewel is suitable for investment, or whether one design is objectively better than another. Business certification and gemstone grading perform different functions.

Orogem’s Antwerp’s Most Brilliant certification

Orogem Jewelers has successfully completed the Antwerp’s Most Brilliant evaluation and is included in the City of Antwerp’s current official list of certified jewellers. Certification is not permanent: Antwerp’s Most Brilliant status is valid for two years, after which a new evaluation is required. Customers can verify certified businesses through the official Antwerp’s Most Brilliant list published by the City of Antwerp.

How can you recognise a certified jeweller?

An Antwerp’s Most Brilliant jeweller can be identified by the official certification sticker displayed at the shop. Consumers should also consult the current official list rather than relying only on a logo displayed on a website. Because the certification has a limited validity period, the official list provides the most reliable confirmation of a jeweller’s current status.

Buying jewellery in Antwerp

The Antwerp diamond district contains diamond traders, laboratories, workshops and jewellery retailers. These businesses perform different functions, and they should not all be evaluated in the same way. When purchasing jewellery, customers should ask for clear written information about the precious metal and its fineness; the identity of each principal gemstone; whether a diamond is natural, laboratory-grown or treated; relevant gemstone treatments; diamond or gemstone grading reports; warranty and after-sales conditions; resizing, maintenance and repair services; and return conditions where applicable.

The AWDC similarly advises customers to ask questions, examine certificates and carefully review the quality and description of a jewel before purchasing it. It also notes that the absence of an Antwerp’s Most Brilliant certification does not automatically mean that a jeweller is unreliable.
