0.40 ct D VS1 on a flat-edged band, 18K white gold
A GIA-certified round brilliant of 0.40 carat, colour D, clarity VS1, on a shank with a flat outer face and defined edges rather than the usual rounded profile. Report 2296929517. No side stones.
Band profile is a real decision, not a detail
Almost every solitaire you will see sits on a rounded shank — a D-shaped section, curved on the outside. This one is flat across the top with two crisp edges, and that changes three things.
It reads wider. A rounded band curves away from the light, so only a narrow strip along the crown catches a highlight and the eye registers that strip as the width. A flat face presents its whole width in one plane. Measured with callipers the two bands can be identical; on the hand, the flat one looks broader and more architectural.
It meets a wedding band flush. Two flat edges sit against each other with no gap. This is the opposite situation to a curved or crossover shank, where a straight band leaves a visible line and you end up commissioning a contoured one. If you already know a plain wedding band is coming later, a flat profile removes that problem entirely.
It shows wear differently. Being honest about the trade: fine scratches on a flat surface line up and become legible, where the same marks on a curved surface scatter and disappear into the highlight. A flat band holds a crisper line when new and asks for polishing slightly sooner. Some people prefer the patina; it is worth knowing which sort you are.
D VS1, and nothing else on the ring
There are no side stones here, no halo and no pavé — which means nothing is helping the centre. On a ring that carries a single diamond and no support, grade does the entire job, and this one is specified accordingly: D, the top of the colour scale, and VS1, where inclusions take ten times magnification to locate.
That is a different purchase from a ring where melee spreads light across the shoulders. Here the eye has exactly one thing to look at, so the stone has to hold up to being looked at.

The alternatives
If you would rather the band itself carried some light, the 0.40 ct D SI1 ring with pavé shoulders puts 0.05 ct along the top of the shank. For the opposite decision about profile — curved, raised, and deliberately not flush with a wedding band — see the 0.30 ct intertwined band ring. All in engagement rings.
