1.00 ct natural oval diamond solitaire, E SI1, 18K white gold
A 1.00 ct natural oval diamond, colour E, clarity SI1, GIA report 1559036763, set as a solitaire in 18K white gold. One ring, made in our Antwerp workshop.
The most stone per euro in this group
At €4,385 this is the least expensive of our five one-carat solitaires, and it is also the one that looks largest. An oval spreads its weight along its length rather than into depth, so a 1.00 ct oval reaches about 7.7 mm long against 6.5 mm across for a round of identical weight — and against roughly 5.5 mm for the Asscher in this group. If apparent size for the money is what you are optimising, the answer on this page is unambiguous.
E colour, SI1 clarity
E is the second-highest colour grade there is, one step from D and indistinguishable from it in a mounted ring. SI1 means inclusions are findable under ten times magnification. On an oval, whose brilliant faceting breaks light into constant movement, SI1 is normally eye-clean — but ovals do have a wider open table than a round, so we will show you the plot and point out exactly where the inclusions sit before you decide. We would rather you knew.
The bow-tie
Every oval shows some degree of a darker band across the centre, caused by the elongated shape shadowing light coming back through the middle. It does not appear on any certificate and it has nothing to do with the grades: two ovals with identical E SI1 reports can look quite different. This is the reason we hold every oval in Antwerp rather than selling it from a list, and the reason we would rather you saw this one before buying.
Why ovals cost less per carat than rounds
An oval retains more of the original rough than a round brilliant, which discards over half its weight in cutting. Less waste, lower price for the same finished carat. That, and not any deficiency in the stone, is why this ring undercuts the round in this group by €1,115 while carrying a higher colour grade.
White gold, plain
Four claws, a tapered band, 18K white gold, rhodium plated, handmade. On an oval a plain setting is usually the right one — the shape already elongates the finger and anything around it interrupts that line. The plating is refreshed as part of normal servicing.
One piece
A single ring, held in Antwerp, with its GIA report. Ring size and any adjustment to the claws are agreed before the piece leaves the workshop.
