1.39 ct natural round brilliant solitaire, L I1, six prong basket, 18K yellow gold
A 1.39 ct natural round brilliant diamond, colour L, clarity I1, HRD report 220000168528, in a six-prong basket setting in 18K yellow gold. One ring, made in our Antwerp workshop.
What you are getting, stated plainly
Nearly a carat and a half of natural diamond for €3,870. That is roughly a quarter of what a colourless, eye-clean stone of this weight would cost, and the reason is on the certificate: L colour is faint yellow, and I1 clarity means inclusions are visible to the unaided eye if you look for them. Both grades are real and we are not going to talk around either one. What we will say is that they are the reason this ring exists at this price, and that plenty of people look at it and decide the trade is worth making.
The colour is the easy part
L is a faint warmth — the tone of most antique diamonds, because grading standards were different when they were cut. Set in yellow gold, as this one is, an L reads as warm rather than as tinted, because the metal and the stone agree. The same diamond in white gold would look quite different and rather worse. Whoever chose this setting understood that.
The clarity is the real decision
I1 is where a diamond stops being eye-clean. On this stone the inclusions are visible if you look at it closely in good light — not scattered across the table, but present. Two things to weigh. First, at arm’s length, which is how anyone else will ever see the ring, they do not read. Second, some I1 inclusions affect durability and some do not; we will show you exactly where these sit on the plot and tell you honestly whether the stone needs any care in wear. That conversation happens before you buy, not after.
Who buys a stone like this
Someone who wants size and is clear-eyed about how they are paying for it. A 1.39 ct that reads as a substantial diamond across a room, in a well-made 18K setting with an HRD report, for less than many one-carat rings. If instead you want a stone that survives a jeweller’s loupe, our 1.00 ct F VS2 and 1.04 ct H VS1 are in the same collection and cost €6,150 and €5,500 respectively — smaller, cleaner, whiter.
Six prongs and a basket
Six claws hold a round stone more securely than four and distribute pressure evenly, which is worth having on a stone with I1 clarity. The open basket underneath lets light in from below.
One piece
A single ring, held in Antwerp, with its HRD report. We would particularly encourage you to see this one in person. Ring size and any adjustment to the setting are agreed before the piece leaves the workshop.
