An oval wears larger than a round of the same weight
Weight sits in a diamond’s depth, and an oval distributes less of its mass downwards than a round brilliant does. The practical consequence is surface area: a 1.50 ct oval presents a face roughly the size of a 1.75 ct round. It also elongates the finger, which is the reason most people who arrive asking for a round leave with an oval once they have tried both on.
F colour, and the two grades above it
F is the last grade of the colourless range — D, E, F — and the point where the scale stops charging for something the eye can verify. Against white gold there is no warmth to see. The grades above cost more and look identical outside a grading laboratory.
SI1 in an oval, and where to look
SI1 means the inclusions are found without difficulty at 10x magnification. In this stone they sit away from the table and the ring is eye-clean in normal light. We say SI1 plainly because it is the reason a 1.50 ct F is available at this price rather than several thousand euros higher; the alternative is paying for a grade whose only manifestation is a line on a certificate.
The bow-tie, and this stone’s
Every oval has a bow-tie — a darker band across the centre where the pavilion facets fail to return light. No certificate grades it, and photographs rarely show it, which is why ovals bought online so often disappoint. This one is faint: visible if you tilt the stone deliberately, absent at any normal angle. It is the single most important thing to check on an oval and the one thing the paperwork will not tell you.
