1.51 carat, D colour, VS1 — and what VS1 means at this size

Clarity grades are not absolute measurements. A grader looks at the stone under ten-power magnification and judges how easily the internal characteristics are found, taking into account their size, number, position and nature relative to that particular diamond. Which has a consequence people rarely think through: the same grade on a bigger stone describes physically bigger features.

A VS1 inclusion in a 0.30 ct diamond might be a pinpoint a few hundredths of a millimetre across. A VS1 in a 1.51 carat stone can be several times that and still earn the grade, because it is being judged against a larger canvas. Clarity therefore matters more as weight rises — not because the standard slips, but because there is more room inside the stone.

Where the eye-clean line actually falls

VS stands for very slightly included, and it is the grade at which the trade stops worrying. At VS1, characteristics are difficult to locate even at 10×; to the unaided eye, at any normal distance, a VS1 stone is clean. That holds at 1.51 ct as reliably as at half a carat, which is why VS1 is the sensible stopping point for a large solitaire: everything above it is paying for a report, everything below it starts asking questions of the naked eye.
