2.12 ct lab grown round brilliant solitaire, D VS1, in 18K white gold
A 2.12 ct round brilliant lab grown diamond, colour D, clarity VS1, IGI report LG807622710, set as a solitaire in 18K white gold. One ring, made in our Antwerp workshop.
Two carats is where a diamond changes register
There is a threshold somewhere around two carats where a ring stops being read as jewellery and starts being read as a diamond. Below it, people notice a nice ring; above it, they notice the stone. At 2.12 ct a round brilliant measures roughly 8.3 mm across — not enormous, but past the point where the eye stops estimating and simply registers size. For a lot of people this weight is the sweet spot: unmistakably substantial, still comfortable to wear every day, and still on the sane side of the price curve.
The round brilliant, and what you are paying for
The modern round brilliant is the only cut designed from optics rather than inherited from tradition: 57 facets at angles calculated to return the maximum light back through the table. It is also the least forgiving to cut, and the shape that wastes the most rough — which is why, weight for weight, rounds cost more than fancy shapes. What you get for that is brilliance no other outline matches. If maximum light per carat is the priority, this is the shape; if maximum spread per carat is the priority, look at the ovals linked below, which cover more finger at the same weight.
D and VS1
Colour D is the top of the scale — not merely colourless but the highest of the three colourless grades. VS1 means inclusions are difficult to locate at ten times magnification and invisible to the eye. On a plain solitaire these two grades are the entire specification: there is no halo, no pavé, nothing to draw attention away from the stone, so the stone has to be right on its own.
Solitaire, and why less is harder
A plain setting is the most demanding thing a jeweller can offer, because every judgement is exposed: the height of the stone above the finger, the taper of the band, the proportion of the claws, whether the diamond sits level. There is no ornament to absorb a mistake. It is also the most durable ring you can own — no small stones to loosen, nothing to check, nothing to re-tighten across decades of wear.
18K white gold
White metal reflects nothing back into a D stone, so the diamond stays exactly as colourless as its grade. Ours is 18K, rhodium plated for a cool bright finish, handmade in the workshop; the plating is refreshed as part of normal servicing.
One piece
A single ring, held in Antwerp, with its IGI report. Ring size and any adjustment to the claws are agreed before the piece leaves the workshop.
