2.18 ct total weight, D VVS1, lab grown, in 18K white gold
A pair of classic studs holding two round brilliant lab-grown diamonds, 2.18 carat together, graded colour D and clarity VVS1, each in four claws in 18K white gold. IGI certified, report LG804627252.
What 2.18 carat actually means on an ear
Stud weights are always quoted for the pair. So this is roughly 1.09 carat per ear — a round stone of about 6.6 millimetres across.
That measurement tells you more than the carat does. Up to about five millimetres a stud reads as a point of light: you see that something sparkles, not what it is. From six millimetres it tips over. The stone acquires an outline of its own, is recognisable as a diamond from the side, and catches light even when the head is still. This pair sits just past that turning point — still a stud rather than a statement, but unmistakably there.
Why clarity counts least in a stud
Of the four Cs, clarity is the least visible in a stud, and the reason is the viewing angle. A ring is looked at from thirty centimetres and straight down, by the wearer, several times a day. A stud is seen from the side, in motion, from a metre or more — and the wearer sees it in a mirror, or not at all.
So VVS1 is, honestly, more than this piece needs. It is here because that is how the stone graded, not because dropping a grade in lab-grown diamond would save you much. What does count in a stud is cut quality: how the stone returns light at an oblique angle, because that is the angle other people see it from.
Colour D counts too, but differently than in a ring. A stud sits against skin and hair rather than against a hand, and in white metal a colourless stone reads cooler there than a grade with warmth in it.
Lab grown, certified by IGI
Crystallised carbon, hardness 10, chemically and optically identical to mined diamond — grown rather than dug up. The LG prefix on the IGI report is the designation for laboratory-grown; colour, clarity, cut quality and weight are graded on the same scales used for mined stones.
