The emerald cut hides nothing, which is the point
Long parallel facets in tiers, a large open table, no scattered light. You look straight into an emerald cut the way you look into a window, and whatever is inside is on display. That is why the cut is unforgiving of inclusions, and also why it produces the effect no brilliant can: broad flashes of light and shadow that shift slowly as the hand moves, rather than a constant glitter. People who choose an emerald cut are choosing calm.
VVS1 — the grade this cut deserves and rarely gets
Very very slightly included, first class: inclusions that a skilled grader has real difficulty locating at 10x magnification. There is one clarity grade above it and one above that. In a shape whose entire character is transparency, this is the grade that lets you look into the stone and find nothing. Most emerald cuts on the market sit at VS or SI because the cut is expensive enough already; this one does not compromise where it matters most.
W-X, and why the yellow gold is not a coincidence
The D-to-Z scale ends at Z, beyond which a diamond is graded as a fancy colour in its own right. W-X sits just short of that: a soft, clear yellow, and in a step cut it reads as an even wash across the whole table rather than a flicker. Stones of this colour are chosen deliberately for yellow gold, where metal and diamond share a tone and the ring becomes a single warm object. This is the largest stone in our step cut group and the one that makes the most of that logic.
1.03 ct, and the way a step cut wears
An emerald cut is shallow relative to a brilliant and spends its weight on surface. A carat here covers noticeably more finger than a carat in a round, and the rectangular outline elongates the hand. Set high on four claws so the pavilion stays open, and sized in our Antwerp workshop before it ships.
