The edges are the whole design
A flat band and a domed band of the same width contain almost the same amount of gold. What separates them is two lines: the edges where the flat face meets the sides. Everything people mean by “modern” in a plain wedding ring comes from those two edges, and so does everything practical about living with one.
They catch light as lines rather than as a curve. A dome produces one soft highlight that moves as the hand moves. A flat face produces a still, even surface with two bright rims. It reads as architectural instead of traditional, and it photographs sharper.
They are the first thing to wear. An edge is a small amount of metal meeting the world at an angle, so it rounds over before the face does. On a band worn daily, the crisp edges of year one are visibly softened by year ten. This is not a fault — many people prefer the softened version — but if what you want is the sharp original look, expect to have the edges re-defined by a polisher every so often.
They sit flush against another ring. Two flat surfaces meet along their whole width. A flat wedding band and a flat-edged engagement ring close against each other with no gap, which a dome cannot do. If the rings are worn together every day, this is the practical argument for flat.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants a wedding ring that looks deliberate rather than inherited, and anyone pairing it with an engagement ring that has a straight-sided band. Anyone who would rather the ring’s outline stayed defined is choosing correctly here — as long as they know the edges are a surface to maintain, not a permanent state.
On rose gold
The copper that gives rose gold its colour also makes it the hardest of the three 18K alloys, and the colour is in the metal rather than plated on it — so it never needs re-plating.
