Ruby was found countless thousands of years before Christ in ancient times. Rubies belong to the corundum mineral species, which also includes sapphires. Its color varies from bright pink to deep red. There are also rare samples with a purple hue (“pigeon blood”). The color is affected by the amount of chromium in the composition. The hue can even determine the place of extraction.

Deposits of large bright red stones are found in Myanmar, and small crimson stones in Tanzania. Outwardly, the crystal resembles spinel, garnet, tourmaline or topaz.

Ruby belongs to the first category of gemstones. It is quite hard (9 points on the Mohs scale), but at the same time fragile and easily splits. The so-called star minerals are of great value. Their shape is due to the presence of needle-like inclusions of rutile. They diverge like the rays of a star. As a rule, there are 6 of them, but there are variants with 12 or 24. The star ruby differs from other rubies by its opacity. But when bright light falls on it, it shines mesmerizingly. Rings with a ruby of this shape look especially impressive.
