Sapphire suits every category of jewellery, but each one asks something slightly different of the stone.

Sapphire earrings

Studs are the most practical: a sapphire surrounded by a diamond halo reads far larger than its carat weight and works from morning to evening. Drop and cabochon designs make more of a statement and are better suited to occasion wear. Because earrings are never knocked against surfaces the way a ring is, they are also where you can safely choose a slightly softer setting or a more delicate cut.

Sapphire pendants and necklaces

A pendant is the easiest way to own a large sapphire. Weight matters far less at the neck than on the hand, so the same budget that buys a 1 ct ring stone can buy something considerably more impressive on a chain. Halo pendants are the classic; heart, key and butterfly designs sell as gifts; and double-halo necklaces with a substantial centre stone sit at the top of the collection.

Choosing sapphire jewellery: colour, cut and metal

Value in sapphire comes from colour first, then clarity, cut and carat weight. What changes between a ring and a pair of earrings is how much of that actually shows.

• Colour. Royal blue is deep and velvety, cornflower blue softer and lighter. Pink runs from pastel to vivid; green from mint through teal to forest; yellow and orange from lemon to mandarin. At the neck and ears, a medium tone with strong saturation reads best, because the stone is seen at a distance rather than at arm’s length.
• Cut. Oval and cushion show colour across the widest face. Round brilliants add sparkle in studs. Cabochon – polished rather than faceted – gives a soft, vintage glow and appears in several of our earring designs.
• Metal. 18K white gold and platinum keep blue and pink crisp. Yellow gold warms green, cornflower and the whole yellow-orange range. Rose gold is the most flattering against skin at the ear.
• Diamonds. Almost every piece here pairs sapphire with natural, conflict-free diamonds in a halo or pavé, which sharpen the colour and add the brilliance a coloured stone does not produce alone.

Heat treatment is standard and fully disclosed on every stone we sell; genuinely unheated sapphires carry a premium. We supply an independent gemmological certificate for larger stones.

How much does sapphire jewellery cost?

Our sapphire jewellery currently runs from around €1 245 to €11 715:

• €1 200 – €1 400 – cushion sapphire halo pendants in 18K gold, in blue, pink and orange.
• €1 300 – €1 700 – sapphire halo stud earrings and oval halo necklaces.
• €2 000 – €4 000 – larger centre stones, cabochon designs and pieces with more substantial diamond work.
• €8 000 and above – statement drop earrings and double-halo necklaces with certified centre stones, up to the 5.43 ct heart-cut sapphire necklace.

Pendants and earrings give more visible stone per euro than rings, because millimetre size matters more than finger-friendly proportions. All prices shown include VAT.

Sapphire as a gift

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the traditional gift for a 45th wedding anniversary. It is also the classic stone for a fifth anniversary in some traditions, and its association with sincerity and faithfulness makes it a natural choice well beyond engagements. A halo pendant or a pair of studs is the easiest sapphire gift to get right: no ring size to guess, and the colour suits almost everyone.

Caring for sapphire jewellery

At 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphire is the hardest gemstone after diamond, so earrings and pendants need very little special treatment. Clean them in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft brush. Store pieces separately so the sapphires do not scratch softer stones around them – sapphire will win.
