How to choose a pink sapphire engagement ring

The centre stone is what makes a pink sapphire engagement ring. Pink sapphires are not graded on a single universal scale, so value comes down to colour first, then clarity, cut and carat weight.

Colour: pastel, hot pink and padparadscha

Chromium content decides how strong the pink is. Low chromium gives pastel or baby pink, soft and easy to wear and the most affordable end of the range. More chromium gives vivid or hot pink, the most sought-after and the most expensive per carat. Many stones lean slightly purple or slightly orange; a touch of purple is common and perfectly attractive, while a distinct pink-orange balance is what defines padparadscha, the rarest sapphire colour of all. Look at the stone in daylight and under warm indoor light, because pink shifts noticeably between the two.

Where pink sapphire ends and ruby begins

There is no universal boundary. The same stone can be sold as a deep pink sapphire in Europe and as a light ruby in parts of Asia, and the label changes the price considerably. Clarity and cut

Fine needle inclusions, called silk, are normal in natural sapphire and confirm the stone is not synthetic. What matters is whether inclusions are visible without magnification and whether they interrupt the colour. Cut is equally important: sapphires are cut to bring out colour rather than to fixed proportions, so a good stone shows even colour across the whole face with no dark centre and no washed-out window. Cushion and oval cuts hold pink particularly well.

Carat weight and treatment

Sapphire is denser than diamond, so compare millimetres rather than carats: a 6.5 mm round sapphire weighs roughly 1.30 ct against about 1.00 ct for a diamond of the same width. Most pink sapphire on the market is gently heated, a permanent and fully accepted practice that improves colour and clarity. Genuinely unheated stones are rarer and cost more. Independent laboratories such as the GIA report both colour and treatment, and we state the treatment for every stone we sell.

Settings and metals for a pink sapphire

Pink is the most metal-sensitive of the sapphire colours: the same stone can look completely different depending on what surrounds it.

• Rose gold – deepens and warms the pink, and makes pastel stones read stronger than they are. The most popular choice.
• White gold and platinum – provide maximum contrast and keep the pink clean and bright. Best for vivid stones.
• Yellow gold – gives a warm, vintage feel and suits pink-orange and padparadscha tones.

A diamond halo is the classic setting for pink sapphire: it makes the centre stone read noticeably larger and adds the brilliance that coloured stones do not produce on their own. Three-stone designs with diamond side stones are the most formal option, while a diamond band adds light along the shank. Where pink sapphires come from

Madagascar has been the dominant source since the Ilakaka deposits were found in the late 1990s, and supplies most of the pink sapphire in the market today. Sri Lanka is the historic source and still produces the finest pastel and padparadscha material. Tanzania, Myanmar and Vietnam also contribute. Origin affects price at the top of the market, but for most stones a well-cut Madagascan pink sapphire with even colour will outperform a poorly cut stone from a famous locality.

Caring for a pink sapphire ring

A pink sapphire engagement ring is made for daily wear. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is the hardest gemstone after diamond, which is what separates it from the other pink options: morganite is softer and pales over time in strong light, and pink tourmaline and kunzite are softer still. Clean it in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft brush, take it off for sport, gardening and swimming, and have the setting checked once a year. Pink sapphire, morganite or ruby?

Morganite gives a similar soft blush at a lower price, but at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it scratches more easily and its colour can fade with prolonged light exposure – a real consideration for a ring worn every day for decades. Ruby is the same mineral as pink sapphire, simply with more chromium: deeper, redder and considerably more expensive. Pink sapphire is the middle path, with ruby’s durability and a softer, more wearable colour.
