What a non-standard profile costs you later
Most plain wedding bands come from a handful of stock profiles: flat, D-shape, low dome, court. This one does not — it has a shaped, structured section, and that is the reason it looks different on the hand from every other ring on this page.
It is worth knowing what that choice implies over a lifetime, because nobody raises it at the time of buying:
- Resizing is a different job. A standard profile can be cut, shortened and the section re-trued against a mandrel in an afternoon. A shaped section has to be re-formed so that the profile continues uninterrupted through the join — otherwise the repair is visible as a flat spot. It is entirely doable; it simply takes a bench jeweller longer and costs accordingly.
- Matching it later is harder. If you want a second band to sit beside it in ten years, a standard profile can be matched by any workshop from stock. A distinctive one has to be reproduced.
- It is the one people remember. That is, of course, the entire point. A plain dome is anonymous by design; this is not, and if what you want is a wedding ring that is recognisably yours, that is worth more than the convenience you give up.
We would rather you chose it knowing both halves of that trade than discovered the second half at a resizing appointment.
White gold and the plating question
18K white gold is not naturally white: it is a pale alloy finished with a thin layer of rhodium. On a ring worn every day that layer thins first at the base, where the band rubs against the finger, and the warmer alloy beneath begins to show through. Re-plating is quick and inexpensive, but it is a recurring appointment — roughly every few years depending on how you use your hands. It is the one ongoing cost that yellow and rose gold do not have.
