On a pair, the match matters more than the grade
Earrings are judged in quite different conditions from rings, and it is worth saying so plainly. You never see your own earrings. Other people see them from the side, across a room, on a moving head, in whatever light happens to be there. Nobody puts a loupe to them.
What does get noticed is whether the two stones match. Two diamonds either side of a face are compared constantly and involuntarily — it is the only occasion on which a layperson sees one diamond beside another. A pair that does not match is obvious to everyone; a pair half a colour grade lower than expected, to nobody.
A pair can fall out of step in three ways, and all three are more visible than the difference between D and F:
- Colour. One stone a shade warmer than the other reads immediately as a fault, even though both would look faultless alone.
- Size. A few hundredths of a carat apart is nothing on the scale and a crooked line across two ears.
- Cut proportion. The most neglected. Two stones of equal weight and equal colour can return light differently if their crown angles or table widths do not match — one flashes, the other sits quiet. People see that without being able to name what they are seeing.
That is why these two stones are selected as a pair rather than bought separately. The certificate tells you what each stone is; that they belong together is the work that comes before it.
D VS1 at 0.53 per ear
Colour D is the top of the scale. VS1 means inclusions can be found under ten times magnification and not with the naked eye. On a stone of 5.2 millimetres, from a metre away, neither grade is perceptible as a grade — they set the price and the paperwork, not what you see.
