0.40 ct round brilliant, F SI1, GIA, in six claws on yellow gold
One natural round brilliant diamond of 0.40 carat, GIA graded colour F and clarity SI1, in six claws on a slim band in 18K yellow gold. GIA report 1555500624.
Six claws instead of four
The difference is not a matter of taste, though it is sold as one. Six claws do two things four do not.
They make the stone rounder. Four claws place four points on a circle and the eye joins them into a faintly square outline; six points sit close enough together that the outline keeps reading round. On a round brilliant that reinforces the shape instead of working against it.
They still hold the stone if one claw is lost. If a four-claw setting loses a claw, the stone rests on three points and the matter becomes urgent. With six, five remain and you have time. On a ring worn daily that is the whole argument.
The other side: six claws cover more of the crown than four, and so let slightly less light in from above. At 0.40 carat that difference is small, but it exists.
SI1 at this size — what you are not paying for here
SI1 means inclusions are clearly visible under ten times magnification. Whether they are visible to the naked eye depends on the size of the stone — and that is precisely where a report grade stops helping you.
On a two carat stone SI1 is a reason to come and look for yourself: the table is large enough to show an inclusion. At 0.40 carat — about 4.8 millimetres across — the table is small enough that an SI1 characteristic almost always stays below the threshold of perception. It is on the report, not on the hand.
That is why this ring costs less than the same size and colour in VS2. With this stone you are not buying a worse ring, you are buying a grade that cannot be seen at this size. If what is on paper matters to you — it counts at resale and for insurance — choose VS2. If you buy on the hand, choose here.
F against yellow gold
F is the last grade of the colourless range. Warm metal always throws something back into the stone, so anyone wanting a colourless stone in yellow gold does better staying within D–F than below it. This stone sits on that border, which in yellow gold is where price and result meet best.
