0.40 ct round brilliant, F VS2, GIA, on a slim yellow gold band
One natural round brilliant diamond of 0.40 carat, GIA graded colour F and clarity VS2, in four claws on a thin tapered band in 18K yellow gold. GIA report 3545972478.
Why a thin band makes the stone look larger
The eye almost never judges size in absolute terms, but against whatever sits next to it. On a solitaire only one thing sits next to the stone: the band.
A broad three-millimetre band places a 0.40 ct stone in a setting nearly as wide as the stone itself, and the stone loses. A slim band of around a millimetre and a half gives that same stone nothing to be measured against — so it reads larger than it is. This is the cheapest way to make half a carat look bigger, and it costs nothing: it lives in the proportion, not in the stone.
There is a price on the other side. A thin band in 18K gold bends more easily than a thick one and wears a little faster underneath over the years. That is not a fault, it is the trade. If you work with your hands daily, you are better off slightly heavier.
F VS2 at 0.40 carat
F is the last grade of the colourless range — D, E, F — and against yellow gold that is a deliberate choice, because warm metal always throws something back into the stone. Anyone wanting a colourless stone in yellow gold does better buying within D–F than below it.
VS2 means inclusions can be found under ten times magnification and not with the naked eye. At 0.40 carat — a stone of about 4.8 millimetres — that is comfortably below the point at which clarity becomes visible. You are not paying here for something you can see, but for what the report says.
The same stone, a different band
We hold exactly this specification on a twist band: 0.40 ct, F, VS2, yellow gold. Only the shank differs. It is the cleanest comparison we can offer — if you want to know what a twist band does to a ring, these are the two to put side by side.
Would rather drop a clarity grade and put the difference into the setting? 0.40 ct F SI1 with six claws.
