A 0.50 carat round blue sapphire, set within a halo and pavé totalling 0.20 carat of diamonds, in 18K white gold.
We build the same round blue sapphire in three degrees of diamond, and this is the fullest. It is worth seeing them as a scale rather than as three separate rings, because the question they answer is one question: how much white do you want around the blue?
At 0.05 carat the diamonds are punctuation. The sapphire’s outline is uninterrupted, metal meets stone directly, and the ring reads as a coloured stone with two small accents. At 0.10 carat a closed halo appears: the blue is framed, its edge sharpened by contrast, and the ring reads larger. Here at 0.20 carat the halo continues down the shoulders as pavé, and the composition tips — the ring becomes a diamond ring with a blue centre rather than a sapphire ring with diamonds.
None is more correct. But the third is a different object from the first, and buyers are rarely shown the sequence.
The colourless stones are set in white metal throughout, which keeps the blue cool and sharp; warm metal alongside a blue sapphire pulls it toward grey.
